Why Should I Get Involved?
Thousands of Americans each year are impacted by crime, either as offenders or victims. At present, there are nearly two million Americans in prison or jail. Nearly all of them will eventually be released, and many of them will commit new crimes. The cycle of crime will continue, unless someone intervenes.
Here are a few ways you can make a difference:
1. In-Prison Seminar/ Family Day
An in-prison seminar is a great way to start out in prison ministry. Seminars are typically a 1-2-day event that features small group interaction, worship, and topical Bible study tailored to the unique stresses of prison life and thier children.
In each session volunteers lead small-group discussions, helping inmates find answers to their questions and personalize the lessons.
In seminar after seminar, the Holy Spirit uses this small-group setting to break down walls that inmates have built around themselves. As they share their hopes, fears, and faith with one another, inmates and volunteers discover God's grace.
2. In-Prison Bible Studies
Faithful & trained Volunteers travel to prisons and weekly to spread the good news of Jesus' love. They lead or assist with small-group Bible studies that introduce inmates to Christ and further disciple them in the spiritual basics. Bible reading, prayer and service to others.
3. Aftercare Ministry- Coaching
Aftercare programs begin months before an inmate faces the outside world. In the mentoring program, Christian inmates are personally matched with trained, Christian volunteers who walk with that person for a minimum of six months after release.
4. Mail Call Program
Many inmates are lonely, needing a friend. When a volunteer requests a correspondent, Texas Prison Ministry matches him or her with an inmate incarcerated in a distant state. This is so that wary writers don't feel responsible for making personal visits.
Volunteer correspondents must be over 18 years of age and in partnership with Prison Fellowship tries not to match single women with male inmates.
5. Spanish
Texas Prison Ministry is always in need of Spanish speaking volunteers who can go into the Texas prison system and impact lives through ministry and biblical teaching, preaching and worship. If that is you or you know someone please contact our Director directly Rick Vasquez
How Do I Get Involved?
Most prison related ministry requires training. You must also complete a TDCJ - ID Volunteer application. Texas Prison Ministry also requires that you complete our Ministry Training Orientation. We believe that good standing in the church is an incredibly critical part of being able to effectively minister to others.
